Which Hardscape Choice Is Right For Your Yard?

If you want to take your backyard to the next level, consider adding some hardscape options. These include all the non-plant (grass, trees, flowers, shrubbery, etc.) decorations and structures you have in your yard. If you would like to know more about popular hardscaping options, keep reading.

Patios and Decks

Patios and decks are a great way to create an outdoor space for eating, talking with friends, etc. Since you aren't directly on the ground, you don't need to worry as much about pests, dirt, and moisture running your fun. Many even come with awnings, which provide shade in the summer and water protection in the rainy months.

Patios are typically less expensive, but it largely depends on the material and style. Some common patio materials include:

  • Concrete
  • Stone
  • Tile
  • Gravel
  • Brick

Decks are commonly made from wood, composite wood, or vinyl.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are incredibly useful if your yard is uneven or sloped. Retaining walls allow you to build tiers, which makes it easier to plant or build on sloped yards. They can also be used to create a little more style, especially around a higher area of the yard. They may also be used as accents around trees or plants.

Retaining walls come in many types, including gravity retaining walls, cantilever retaining walls, embedded retaining walls, and much more. Retaining walls also need special drainage to prevent damage when the soil absorbs water.

Pergolas and Gazebos

If you have a larger backyard, consider a pergola or gazebo. These are detached structures, so you install them anywhere you want. As with decks, pergolas and gazebos are commonly made from wood, but some use composite wood or vinyl.

Gazebos are more closed. They typically have a roof and railings/walls. They may also have built-in benches. Pergolas don't have a roof, but they have beams across the top. Many people allow climbing plants to grow around their pergola or hang plants from the beams.

Fences

Finally, just about anyone can benefit from a fence. Fences provide security and privacy. Fences hinder trespassers from sneaking into the yard, but they also keep kids and dogs secured. They come in a wide variety of materials and styles, so finding the right one largely depends on your needs, wants, and budget.

Fences may also be useful if you have a pool or other potentially hazardous items. Make sure the fence has a good lock that kids can't manipulate.

Trees, grass, and flowers are just part of your landscaping. Hardscaping can elevate your yard to the next level and help define spaces. If you would like to know more, contact a hardscaping company like Precision Hardscapes & Excavating LLC.

About Me

Making Over My Yard

After we purchased our first home, I realized that there were a few things in the yard we needed to focus on. In addition to going through and weeding the entire area, we also started thinking about things that we could plant that would add a little interest. It was really incredible to see how much of a difference our efforts made, and pretty soon our yard was one of the nicest ones in our neighborhood. Believe it or not, we even had people asking us who did the work professionally, which was hilarious because we were just doing the best we could. This blog is all about making over your yard with the right landscaping.
